Why is my heat pump blowing cool air in winter?

Two normal explanations and one problem. Heat pumps deliver air cooler than a gas furnace does, so warm-but-not-hot air is expected. The system also periodically runs a defrost cycle to clear the outdoor coil, which briefly feels cool. If the air is genuinely cold and the house is losing temperature, the reversing valve, refrigerant charge, or auxiliary heat strips need checking.

At what temperature does a heat pump stop working well in North Carolina?

Most standard heat pumps lose efficiency below roughly 35 to 40 degrees and rely on supplemental electric heat strips below that. Sandhills winters rarely push systems past their limits for long, which is why heat pumps are well suited to this region. Modern cold-climate and variable-speed models hold capacity considerably lower.

Why is my electric bill so high with a heat pump?

Almost always the auxiliary heat strips running more than they should. Strips use several times the electricity of normal heat pump operation. Common triggers are a thermostat set to emergency heat, large setback swings that force the strips on, a refrigerant charge problem, or a failing defrost control. A diagnostic visit will identify which.

Should I install a heat pump or a gas furnace in the Sandhills?

For most Moore County homes a heat pump makes more sense. Winters here are mild enough that a heat pump handles the season efficiently while also providing cooling from one system. A gas furnace pairs well if natural gas is already at the home and winters run colder than average. The right answer depends on a load calculation, not a rule of thumb.
